Lots of the other books I have read recently are about memory; this is about not remembering, because the memories are of not having known. It is a cruel book about an unkind story that happens to a far-from sympathetic narrator, that I read at a most unhappy time in my own life, and yet it held me in a power that compelled me to finish it.
