As might be expected in a collection of essays, some of the writing in this book is great and some is only ok. I found the first person accounts to be the most compelling. Detroit 1967 was certainly eye-opening and a much-needed new perspective for me on the rebellion. Having grown up hearing only the white suburban take on what happened in Detroit in '67, I knew I wasn't be told what really caused the uprising and what actually took place. This collection of essays covers many aspects I hadn't even considered as factors in 1967 and its aftermath: police, housing, media coverage. I think I will seek out more of a narrative about this period in Detroit's history but this format was illuminating and interesting.… (altro)
