Even though this book is really target to religious scholars, to folks who really know the different eras of Japanese history, century by century.. even though I am no such scholar at all... Stone provides enough background and guidance that I was never utterly lost. I am sure I missed a lot of nuance. But I learned a lot, too! Stone gives some good quick overviews of key history, e.g. of Nichiren's life. This was extremely useful for me!
There is an awful lot of Japanese terminology here, especially names of doctrinal positions. But the terms are all given in Romanized transliteration, so my utter lack of Kanji and Hiragana was no impediment at all.
Stone also covers a lot of modern scholarship, the different views on the relationship between the Nichiren and Tendai schools. This is all utterly new territory for me, so... it was a good sort of jumping into the deep end! But I cannot comment on the adequacy of Stone's characterizations.… (altro)
