An interesting, if lightweight, account of the very early days of the British colonies of Australia. Beyond the penal settlement, it covers the incredibly harsh and basic life of the early squatters, who subsisted on the bare essentials, and coveted the weekly appearance of a bullock train selling supplies.

A collection of six short books, still with separate original pagination. Each is a short biography of one of the first six Australian governors, from Arthur Philip to Thomas Brisbane. They were all kings of the new colony, but still beholden to their mandates given from an out-of-touch bureaucracy in England, many thousands of kilometres and many months away. And faced with pressures of free settlers, uncooperative military (who rebelled in a coup against Bligh), convicts, freed convicts, drought and flood, and of course the indigenous people.
The books were probably aimed at high school students, and provide little detailed information.
