Meic Stephens (1938–2018)

Non l’ho mai usato per il lavoro ma è divertente leggerlo. E’ diviso per argomento – vediamone uno a caso. Robert Frost (attr.): Poetry is what gets lost in translation; Ned Rorem (1967): The art of translation lies less in knowing the other language than in knowing your own; Percy Bysshe Shelley (1821): It were as wise to cast a violet into a crucible that you might discover the formal principle of its colour and odour, as seek to transfuse from one language into another the creations of a poet; Sir John Denham (1648): Such is our pride, our folly, or our fate / That few, but such as cannot write, / translate; Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1779): Not a translation – only taken from the French. Per chi non sa l’inglese, la citazione di Denham dice più o meno: “Tale è il nostro orgoglio, nostra follia e nostro destino / Che pochi, solo coloro che non sanno scrivere, / traducono”. Lui lo sapeva 350 anni fa ma noi, senza questo dizionario, forse non l’avremmo indovinato…
