In his autobiography he writes, " I have tried to tell the truth, and to tell it interestingly. As far as I can, I have avoided heroics, and I have tried not to sentimentalize about myself."
A fascinating and engrossing book of a Harvard- educated journalist who lived a peripatetic life in Paris for more than a decade. I first learned of him in Four Lives in Paris by Hugh Ford and was intrigued.
Having returnd to New York for several years during the Depression, he writes, "Life... does give us the opportunity, even if brief, to experience the profound peace of shunning illusion, scorning sham, and taking to our hearts and our minds the experiences which, whether they be a painful or joyous, could not be understood or felt whenever we cheated, or pretended, or lied." (p. 411)
