- Nancy Stark Smith was a dancer, choreographer, teacher, and writer. She was especially known for her work in contact improvisation, a vigorous and creative form that requires a partner. Stark Smith started Contact Quarterly, a journal of dance and improvisation, with her friend the dance artist Lisa Nelson; it moved from print to online-only publication in January, 2020. Stark Smith also developed The Underscore, which is a "long-form dance improvisation structure" starting in 1990.
