More of a high 3, but quite cool. And, thank you-thank you, for getting genderless pronouns right, Ms. Sriduangkaew. I may put a slightly longer review here in the next couple days.

Exploration of war effects on a soldier left to flounder in the aftermath of some questionable political decisions.
Quite excellent.

I have seen Goodreads reviews fault Stephen King for From a Buick 8 despite King's reminder “I thought of telling him I didn't know about reasons, only about chains—how they form themselves, link by link, out of nothing; how they knit themselves into the world. Sometimes you can grab a chain and use it to pull yourself out of a dark place. Mostly, though, I think you get wrapped up in them. Just caught, if you're lucky. Fucking strangled, if you're not.” Like From a Buick 8, Winterglass is a beautifully told tale without a destination.

Benjanun Sriduangkaew masterfully tells a steampunk tale of magic, alternate world technology, and ghosts. She writes of a world where women have no need for man, whether they are gladiators or generals. I read the novel wanting to know what Nuawa would do when she encountered Lusadh and the Winter Queen, but nothing happened once she did. The novel ended like it began; as an assassin chasing her prey.

Unlike other novels about the journey and not the destination, Benjanun does not write with enough passion and conflict to imbibe them with life. It was always obvious that Nuawa would meet the General and the Winter Queen. Benjanun does not jeopardize her heroine, but wraps her richly in "plot armor" as she defeats everyone she meets.

The premise and characters were interesting, but the passion and destination left me wanting. 3.5 stars out of 5, rounded up to 4 for novelty and a woman-centric world.
