This is a graphic novel I ordered for use in my secondary science classes. Sohn describes the adventures of Max Axiom as he teaches about Newton’s laws at an amusement park. I was surprised to see that "Max Axiom, Super Scientist" is not a child or teenager, but an adult man. The former might have been more engaging for young audiences. The characters are diverse in race and gender, and the graphic novel format may engage students who struggle to learn content from textbooks. Vocabulary is clearly defined, and the text includes diagrams to clarify important concepts. The main problem with the text, when used at the secondary level, is that all mathematics is omitted from the work. There is not even an appendix at the end outlining key formulas for understanding what has been discussed. Note that it is also only 32 pages long, including front matter and index As such, this work functions best as a supplemental text at the secondary level.… (altro)

Children love comic books, their imagination flies when the characters charge lives and it is apparently they who are speaking the reading becomes much more interesting and enjoyable, then the lessons of physical science will not be boring as many might think. In this book children of different ages can identify about forces and motion. For example Forces that don’t cause objects to move are balanced forces. A great example of balanced forces is the chair you’re sitting on. As you sit on a chair, the force of gravity pulls your body downward. They can learn a lot of sciences vocabulary.… (altro)

This graphic novel follows super scientist Max Axiom as he explains, in easy to read text, the science behind force and motion. This is one graphic novel in a set with Max Axiom explaining various topics related to science. The collection would be a great add to a classroom library, especially a science classroom, with Max Axiom detailing various adventures while teaching critical topics in science. This would also be a great mentor text to use while teaching students about graphic novels.

The Astro the Alien series is a Beginning to Read Book published by Norwood Press. I like this series as it is simple to read and filled with a lot of activities and suggestions at the end to help children develop both reading recognition skills and comprehension skills. In this book Astro and his friends Ben and Eva fly to the dessert in Astro's space pod. They bring their camping gear and spend a night. They get to see animals in the day and those that come out at night. They also talk about climate and how it effects the dessert and animals. The illustrations were well done. They are bright, colourful and large so you can see the animals clearly. A good book for a family library and primary classroom. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.… (altro)
