"Having no professional identity - he had been a farmer, writing teacher & naval officer, Smart found himself without prospects of a job at age 49. So in 1953 he rented his Ohio farm & retired to San Miguel de Allende. He did find a home but warned others that life was not as cheap as advertised in the USA, the healthful conditions depended upon one's ailment, hospitals & public utilities were very poor and that one must become accustomed to poverty & death.
