The narrator of this new picture-book from Maine-based Tilbury House - one of my favorite smaller, independent presses - describes the invariable reaction of his younger sister's best friend, Sheila, to their family's sustainable living practices. In a word: weird. From their habit of composting, rather than throwing garbage away, to their preference for bike-riding, rather than car-driving, everything about the family seems 'weird' to Sheila, who doesn't hesitate to speak her mind. Fortunately for her, and for her friends, the family in question aren't particularly concerned about doing things the 'normal' way, and, as the narrator concludes, Sheila ends up enjoying their lifestyle after all...

Although its heart it definitely in the right place, I have to agree with those reviewers who found Sheila Says We're Weird just a little too didactic. It's less of a story, really, than a series of vignettes, in which the narrator's family does something atypically sustainable in nature, and Sheila chimes in with her "that's weird" comment. Something with more narrative and character development - an argument between Sheila and Tina, perhaps, with subsequent rapprochement - probably would have worked better, communicating the same ideals in a less preachy way. Still, this wasn't unbearably preachy (or perhaps I just feel that way because I'm on board with the message?), and the colorful artwork by Jennifer Emery was engaging and expressive. Recommended to those looking for children's picture-books that address issues of sustainable, green living.… (altro)
