I was seriously turned off by the supposedly "remarkable" women in this book. Just about every one of them was a feminist, man-hating, suffragette. Granted, several of them had reasons to be nervous about men, but I think it would have been so great to feature a few stories of women who were "remarkable" alongside their "remarkable" husbands. Instead, we get story after story of women who weren't "truly great" until they'd shed the confines of marriage and set out on their own feminist path toward independence and freedom. So sad.

I did like the story about the woman who buried her baby at North Powder. I always meant to go visit that grave as my husband and I grew up just 20 minutes from there. Also, the story of Mrs. Dorion was interesting since I lived in those dorms at La Grande that were named for her!… (altro)
