- Breve biografia
- Sam Shere was born Samuel Shereshevsky in Minsk, Russian Empire (present-day Belarus). He emigrated to the USA and became one of the top photojournalists of his day. He is best remembered today for capturing one of the most famous images in history -- the "Hindenburg disaster," the explosion of the Hindenburg airship, the largest dirigible ever built, on May 6, 1937, as it arrived at its mooring mast in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The photo earned him Editor and Publisher's best news photograph award that year. It is held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In a career that spanned 30 years, Shere worked for International News Photo, part of the Hearst publishing empire, and Life Magazine. He was a pioneer in the use of the 35mm camera, and took other historic photos of the 20th century, including Charles Lindbergh's take-off from Roosevelt Field in 1927; the invasion of Sicily in World War II; Wendell Wilkie's 1944 funeral; and French President Charles DeGaulle's visit to New York. He also took memorable photos of daily life in New York, travel, and sports events.
