An interesting history of libraries established during the Freedom Summer of 1964 (most known for the murders of civil rights workers Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman). The writer interviewed many people who participated (including Room 222 actress Denise Nicholas), and thus the material has a fresh immediacy and spontaneity. Because he is not an academic by training, however, it also has a few slips, but little that detracts. Today's readers will no doubt recall the libraries that sprung up during the Occupy Wall Street protests, and a chapter could have been spent on such subsequent efforts.… (altro)
