Burma Surgeon [ 1943 ] Gordon S. Seagrave (Lieut.… di Gordon S. Seagrave
A very interesting account of a missionary doctor in Burma in the 1930’s and early WW2. A very human story told around people less than events. The nurses were an impressive group of women. Eventually they operated as a field hospital for the Chinese forces under Stilwell. The account of the walk out of Burma is excellent. If you have ever covered mountains on foot, it is astounding to take in what they did and the footgear and food they had. Remarkable people. Recommended reading.
A well constructed account of the Seagrave detachment and the medical service that they provided to the Allied forces in the campaign to retake Burma during the Second World War. His style is matter of fact and straightforward. The descriptions of the wide variety of maladies is awful to contemplate. The surgical nurse team that he created from the various hill tribes is remarkable for the time and place. He was clearly an exceptional individual who drew the best from those around him.
