Strossen's speech on behalf of the ACLU at the San Diego convention is the core, book-ended by much shorter contibrutions from Gaiman and other writers - from Dave Sim before he turned out to be a misogynist, and Frank Miller before he turned out to be a bigot.

It's funny how last-century this all feels; sure, protecting freedom of speech from government interference is still an issue, including in the creative industries (just last week we had another redneck Texan legislator protesting against subversive literature in schools), but it seems to me that the debates we are now having are more often about the use of (legally protected) speech to punch down at the oppressed, and what options are open to the rest of us exercising our rights of freedom of association and freedom of speech to object to creators who choose to do that, while at the same time of course deploring acts or threats of violence by state or non-state actors.… (altro)

I wanted to like this a bit more, but in the end it was just ok. The story itself was a bit of a stretch I think (yes, I know this is fiction, yadda yadda, but still). The ending did leave a bit to be desired, but it does make clear this volume is the start of a new series. So, who knows, the series could get better. But if I go by this, well, it was just ok. It is the old story of people who should know better repeating the mistakes of the past anyhow, and then reaping the bad results. The art on the comic was also ok. By that I mean it was adequate, but I have seen better. In the end, it is a nice and quick fluffy read, so keep expectations low.… (altro)

In de Humble Bundle van Neil Gaiman zaten ook het e-magazine Defender en het e-boek Free Speeches, alle twee uitgave van CBLDF oftewel Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Deze organisatie houdt zich bezig met alle censuur op strips in Amerika te bestrijden en wordt door Neil Gaiman enthousiast gesteund. Neil Gaiman die zelf in zijn carrière als schrijver ook vaker met censuur van zijn werk te maken heeft gekregen.

Door deze twee items te lezen heb ik meer inzicht gekregen in hoe censuur in Amerika al heel lang bestaat en telkens weer opnieuw opkomt wanneer er nieuwe media is. Want strips, televisie, gaming en internet hebben allemaal op de lijst gestaan als oorzaak van het ondermijnen van Amerikaanse kinderziel en ze gemaakt tot gewelddadige criminelen wat dan ook de reden is om ze te verbieden.
Mooi ook dat er ergens wordt aangehaald dat de voorvaderen van de Amerikanen mensen waren die de geloofsuitvoering van hun oorspronkelijke landgenoten niet streng genoeg vonden en het in dit nieuwe land gingen doen zoals God het echt bedoeld had. Alles in het licht van straf en beloning.

En dat is precies waar het CBLDF tegen strijd. Het vrije woord zien zij als het heilige goed en er worden ook wat rake argumenten gegeven waarom dat zo is. Ik heb bij sommige voorbeelden van censuur met mijn mond van verbazing open gezeten. Nederland is wat dat betreft toch wel een heel vrij land en dat is iets waar we heel blij mee mogen zijn.… (altro)
