Breve biografia
It was Dorothy Rosby's experience as a humorous speaker that led her to start writing humor. As a member of member of Toastmasters, an organization where members practice their public speaking skills, she loved doing humorous speeches and won many humorous speech contests. From there she began to provide entertainment at various events. Eventually she rewrote some of her speeches and submitted them to her local newspaper. The editor agreed to take her on as a humor columnist and her column now runs in papers across the West and Midwest. In 2014 she put together her first humor collection, "I Used to Think I Was Not That Bad and Then I Got to Know Me Better." She's since published three more.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, in a good way. You know the feeling, you are expecting one thing and getting another.

The collection of Dorothy Rosby's newspaper articles, which not only focus on Christmas but also holidays in general, is written in a straightforward, unpretentious style and is full of wry, sarcastic, clever humor.

I couldn't help but feel that we have all been in similar circumstances-feeling inadequate, unprepared, overwhelmed and worn out-as we navigate our way through holidays. I also couldn't help but feel Rosby was writing from an all too familiar place of experience.

Her writing style brings a feeling of much-needed relief from the normal over the top experiences we all want and create for the holidays.

I liked Rosby's ability to make you feel as though you were having a cup of coffee or tea with her and she was simply chatting with you about the chaos of the holidays.

The humorous short stories had me laughing and reflecting on how to stay away from holiday pitfalls. I found myself saying things like, "Listen to this," to my family as the stories touched close to home.

I know my goals, expectations and anticipation for the Christmas season are always thwarted by my grandiose ideas that no one could accomplish. I think I'm striving for the excitement and joy that accompanied much more nostalgic times of childhood. In order to avoid slipping into the familial, social and commercial traps, I will now frequently refer back to this book. After all, when I was younger, Christmas in particular was low-key but a lot of fun; surely it can be the same now, right?

I received a complimentary copy of this book from iRead Book Tours. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

I was not sure what to expect when I picked up to read Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate, Holidays, Special Occasions and Other Times Our Celebrations Get Out of Hand. Oh my goodness, within minutes, I was laughing out loud. I was often reading aloud to my kids to allow them to enjoy parts of it, as well. It was so fun to read and nice to have something that was making light of the stresses of Christmas and other major occasions throughout the year. I was entertained with each chapter and found myself re reading a few to enjoy one more time before moving on to the next. I thought this was a great book to read that had me giggling from start to finish. I had no problem devour it in one day. It is going to be placed on my limited keeper shelf to read again and again.

Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate, Holidays, Special Occasions and Other Times Our Celebrations Get Out of Hand is getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who love reading essays and who are needing some humor while trying to get through the holidays.

I received a paperback copy of Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate, Holidays, Special Occasions and Other Times Our Celebrations Get Out of Hand from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

‘Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate contains lighthearted, sarcastic, and witty essays that touch on the overwhelmingness (yes, that’s a word!) of the holidays. The cover art showcases Christmastime, but the essays cover various holidays throughout the year.

A few (partial) examples:

My Dearest Valentine,
… there are a few smaller issues that have troubled us over the years, and as my gift to you I’m going to take the time now to explain my side of things so you’ll know why I’m right. Oh, and happy Valentine’s Day!

Dear Santa,
I know you haven’t heard from me since I wrote to ask for that Barbie doll all those years ago. I might have written you more often if I’d gotten it. But I’m finally willing to give you another chance.

Although I enjoyed the humor, it was sometimes too heavy for me to eat up an entire meal of the inadequate, not-so-celebratory bits. Yes, I know, the book is all in fun and is satirizing the holiday craze, so I still got some chuckles and smiles from it. But more enjoyable when taken a spoonful at a time.

I’m a joyful, merry participant in Christmas, and thankful for the seasons of giving, thanks, and most importantly, celebrating my Savior’s birth. But I still appreciate the fun and buoyant sarcasm depicted in these entertaining essays. 😜

First Line: Merry Christmas friends!

These essays cover just about every annoying thing that can possibly happen in a modern life: struggles with technology, littering, or even hoarding cups and glasses. Everyone, no matter what age, can find something in this book that they can relate to.

Not only was this book a great distraction from everything going on this year, but it was also pretty educational. She included statistics and facts about pollution, littering, and recycling. Though I don't think the point of the essay was scrabble pieces, I did learn how many tiles are in Scrabble (the answer is 100, if you were wondering; two blank pieces and 98 letters).

Of course, as it is with other books similar, there are likely going to be some things you won't relate to, and some that may even confuse you. There are a couple essays about kids and married life, which I didn't relate to at all. Even so, they were still humorous.

A lot of the books I've read recently have been fairly dark and at times extremely emotional, so this book was a great book to read while processing the others. If you need a break from everything going on in the world right now, this might be the perfect book for you.
