While not quite the sweeping social history I would have liked, this history of Pellagra is quite well written and engaging. It's a disease that modern doctors have mostly forgotten about, but was a scourge not even 150 years ago. It's also a disease that's entirely man made and proof that nature is not half as mean to man as man is.
