Breve biografia: Regina Maria Roche, née Dalton, was born in Waterford, Ireland and moved to Dublin as a child. She lived in England after her marriage in 1794. Her first two novels, The Vicar of Lansdowne (1789) and The Maid of the Hamlet (1793), were published under her maiden name. Her third novel, a sentimental Gothic romance called The Children of the Abbey (1796-97), rocketed her to fame and became one of the most popular novels of the period, rivaling The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe.
The Children of the Abbey
was translated into several languages, including French, German and Spanish. Mrs. Roche published Clermont: A Tale, in 1798, but then experienced financial troubles and did not write again until 1807, when she received aid from the Royal Literary Fund. She wrote about 10 more novels, most set in rural Ireland, but none matched her earlier successes. She returned to her native country in the 1820s and died in relative obscurity.

The Children of the Abbey (Valancourt Classics) di Regina Maria Roche

One of my favorite books ever. To correct the blurb, Amanda and Oscar are not in love, they are brother and sister, each of whom is "crossed in love" but not with each other! :) The hero in this book is not too heroic (he's the weakest part, IMO) but the villian is deliciously moustache-twirling, the heroine quite human if very virtuous and her brother, a compelling subplot character who suffers from that same villain.

It's a gothic without a ton of blood, evil nuns, etc, but plenty of action, sensibility and plot twists. Roche has a great way with words and setting the mood. If you liked books like Emmeline or Udolpho, this is your book!… (altro)

Clermont di Regina Maria Roche

This is a rather fun, albeit confusing, romp into a late 18th century Gothic novel. If your thing is very detailed plots with spots of poetry, people who faint all over the place, characters whose identies keep changing, and the repetitive use of the word "melancholy", then this is the story for you. As a heads up, if you think that characters who have the same name will be a burden to your reading this book, then seek a person to tutor you through this merry tale of intrigue, nobels, and castles. Looking back on this tale, I found it took a little work to understand it all, but that my efforts were well rewarded by the book's conclusion.… (altro)
