My Review: I can only say that Stance makes a perfectly good male character...selfish, unthinking, insensitive to the feelings of others...and a generally unpleasant person to read about for those reasons.
I suspect this is not the author's intent. I can't prove that. I was reading along and suddenly had the thought that I wasn't clear why Stance was female to begin with. Does this selfish, thoughtless teenager who's only focused on how ro get what she wants actually need to be female? The message that sounds like it sends to me is "only boys get to do, say, think, and act exactly as they please." I don't like that message.

The translation read very well, in that I was never bored...just squicked out...and I particularly enjyed the oddly specific details of how that era's firearms worked. Not a book I'd give to my granddaugher but fine for adults.… (altro)

Schitterend verhaal, ook zo geschreven. In de 8e eeuw leeft Yrsa in Denemarken. Ze is de bastaarddochter van de stuurman van het dorp. Ze is mank en daardoor had ze als baby eigenlijk gedood moeten worden. Ze heeft voorspellende gaven en daarmee verovert ze zich een plek in de klein gemeenschap waar ze woont. Mimirs Krukje heet het dorp naar de grote steen die Mimir de reus er ooit heeft neergelegd. Er is ook een slavin, zuster Job, een jonge non die geroofd is uit Gande, (Gent) omdat ze zegt dat haar vader een graaf is die zeker losgeld voor haar zal betalen.
Yrsa en zuster Job trekken met elkaar op,tegen wil en dank maar langzaam groeit er een vriendschap tussen ze. Ze vluchten samen als ze een jongen uit het dorp hebben gedood die Job heeft verkracht. Ze beleven allerlei avonturen, samen met Odin, de grote wolfshond en Sleipnirszoon het grote paard dat ze van een handelaar stelen. Ze vechten voor hun leven en uiteindelijk is Job roeier op een schip, vermomd als monnik en lijkt het erop dat ook Yrsa aan boord is, na een enorme confrontatie met haar grootmoeder Guntur.mHet eind is open. Heel leuk om zoveel mythologie is het verhaal te lezen. Geestig zoals de twee vrouwen elkaar blijven proberen te overtuigen van het gelijk van hun geloof. Geweldig boek!… (altro)
