How to avoid huge ships and other implausible titled books kom 2008, och har innehåller därför endast de bästa tävlande från de trettio första åren av Diagram Prize, priset som delas ut till årets konstigaste boktitel. Således söker man förgäves efter sådana skatter som Managing a dental practice: The Genghis Khan way och Cooking with Poo (en bok som en gång för alla borde fått de engelsktalande att sluta med sina överversaliserade boktitlar). Däremot kan man hitta sådant som God makes sex great!, How green were the nazis?, Fancy coffins to make yourself, och min favorit: Bombproof your horse (tyvärr tycks den inte handla om hur man klär sin häst i skyddande material, utan hur man tränar den att inte få panik vid plötsliga starka ljud).

Huvuddelen av böckerna är facklitteratur: det är kanske inte så konstigt att beskrivande titlar kan bli underligare än mer fria, men man hittar ändå sådana trevligheter som The anger of aubergines, Fabulous small jews och The big book of lesbian horse stories (sex, och speciellt lesbiskt sådant, tycks överlag vara väl representerat).

Det är tyvärr inte mycket innehåll förutom omslagen, författare, förlag och en mycket kortfattad beskrivning; å andra sidan är det tveksamt om innehållet kan tänkas svara mot titlarna. Boken får väl därför snarast ses som lämpad för dem med mycket små kaffebord. Trevlig är den i vilket fall, om än snabbt avklarad.… (altro)

The trade journal of the British bookselling trade, The Bookseller, has for some thirty years hosted the Diagram Prize for the Oddest Book Title of the Year. Entries have to be nominated and have to be properly-published books, not vanity publications deliberately created with an eye on the title. Past classics have included Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Nude Mice, Large and very large hole drilling, Scenes from the history of concrete, Hot topics in urology, The Gut Contents of Six Leathery Turtles, The Big Book of Lesbian Horse Stories, and, of course, How to avoid huge ships.
