This middle grade graphic novel tells a hopeful story of how even when we are made to feel powerless about important issues, we can stand strong and use our voice (even if it’s on a local level) to bring attention to these issues. This book is dedicated to “the people of Flint, Michigan” and deals with a similar issue where the area water is polluted with harmful chemicals that are causing many health problems in the community. No one has made any connection however, until our protagonist Ruthie who is a budding journalist.

Ruthie struggles with the adults in her life not believing her because she is “just 12,” and thankfully has an awesome science teacher and journalist friend that help teach her the ropes and ethical code of journalism. With their advice, she is able to get the proper evidence and interviews to really bring attention to the issue to high levels and help her community. I also really enjoyed the Author’s Note at the end that talks about the importance of vetting news sources and telling the difference between real and fake news.

The illustrations in this book were very eye catching and unique as well and really added to the story. I think this one would be good for kids interested in journalism, news, mysteries, activism, science, health issues, and honestly just middle graders that really like graphic novels in general, it’s a good one.… (altro)

Empowering graphic novel on the subject of journalism and water pollution -- 12 year old Ruthie starts with a personal newsletter and ends up calling out a major polluter. Along the way, school pressure to kiss her crush, lying to achieve her aims (which does not go well) and political pressure come to bear as her work gets noticed on social media. Love Ruthie's courage of conviction, love that her persistent cavities lead her to figure out that her own tapwater is suspect, love how much she learns about personal integrity. Love the classroom focus on Flint, MI and the water supply there. I think the penis graffiti story is hilarious, and will draw in readers, but I fear it might turn off adults before they get the chance to see what a great story this is.… (altro)
