This was definitely not my usual choice of a read and review book as it contains the dreaded ‘romance’ that can sometimes overwhelm a book and make it all too cloying and sickly sweet. Not the case with this debut novel from this Author, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I can honestly say I wasn’t looking forward to reading this book at all, but now that I have, I am really glad that I took that leap of faith and read on until the end.

The characters in this novel were what really made it worth my time, in my opinion. They were well developed and fleshed out enough to make them easy to like, or dislike if they were of that persuasion. The main protagonist had a depth and originality to her that is often lacking in books of this kind, and it was refreshing to see that the Author wrote her in a way where she was not full of teenage angst, but able to open up, grow and move on from the things which were originally holding her back. This quality made her easily likeable, and probably someone most readers would want to know in reality. Even the minor characters, to a point, were given enough depth to make them interesting and not just appear as ‘part of the scenery’

Unfortunately if you are looking for the next great thing in the paranormal/creature love interest genre, you won’t find it here. This book is in a genre that in my opinion has been done to death making it hard for any new Author to find a different approach to writing it; the plot wasn’t anything new and groundbreaking, but there were so many good things going on in the book that this didn’t detract too much from the overall enjoyment. However, what I do feel would have really pulled it up another notch, would have been the use of a really good proof reader and/or editor as some of the flaws that appeared should have been picked up by those working in this area of the book.

Overall, I would recommend this book to lovers of this genre, and I will probably be reading some more in the series as I am intrigued to see how the Authors style, and the plot/characters, develops as it progresses.

I am not sure about this book. The main character Corbin Green is a twenty-two year old college student who lives with her mother. She is studying art and loves to draw and paint. Her mother suffers from mental health issues as did her mother before her. When Corbin's mother buys her a gift at a yardsale, strange things start to happen. It is a small wooden box that is dirty, tarnished and the lid is sealed with wax. At first Corbin forgets about it, but she has begun hearing voices calling to her at night. When Corbin comes across it later in the story, she decides to clean it up and break the seal to see what is inside it. This is when the story takes a very strange turn for me. The voice she has tried to ignore gathers strength. Is this some kind of demon from a horror movie or is she beginning to have mental health issues of her own. As the story progresses, Corbin changes drastically and then all of a sudden, the story just ends with the ubiquitous to be continued. I was not impressed at all. I will not be continuing with this story. It is billed as a science fiction book, but I am not too sure about that. The publ isher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.… (altro)

First, there was the huge misunderstanding of what fibromyalgia is and does, which threw me right out of the book. Fibro doesn't destroy your lungs causing you to need a lung transplant. Since someone needing a lung transplant turned out to be important to the story that careless error was a big deal.

Second, the story rubbed me the wrong way in a personal level. It wasn't until I read the author's notes I understood why. She was writing her way to understanding someone else having cancer. But she wasn't at all understanding illness. The book smacks of inspiration porn.

I do want to note that I thought the author wrote well, but the lack of research really distracted from her talent.

YMMV, but this book was awful to me.
