This two-volume scholarly work recounts the history of the book from AD 476 to 1709 and is full of fascinating anecdotes, descriptions of the scriptoria in the monasteries where the monks laboriously hand-copied old manuscripts in the Middle Ages, incunabula and the earliest printed books of Gutenberg, Caxton, Elsevier and others together with biographies of some of the early authors.
