Anne Provoost

So I read this as a teenager, i dont think it was written for teenagers but you never know with dutch literature. Young baby me found this in the school library one day, and for years I thought that this book was just a fever dream because I could never find it again.
I do not remember much except that i really enjoyed reading this incredibly befuddling fever dream of a story. I refuse to go in detail on the content of this book, though i will say that it's not "upsetting" per say. Just supremely strange.… (altro)

Krop. Door: Anne Provoost.

Provoost kennen we al lang als gelauwerd schrijver, maar dit is haar debuut als dichter. En wat voor een debuut: eentje dat bijblijft.

Door het aantal schrijfkilometers dat zij al in haar vingers heeft springt haar unieke stem direct van het papier. Geen aarzelende eerste stapjes op het dicht-veld maar wel kleine verhaaltjes; soms sprookjesachtig, licht absurdistisch, met veel humor en boordenvol muziek. Letterlijke (pom-pom-pom) én figuurlijke (ritmisch) muziek.

Moederschap, ouderschap, ouder worden, samen ouder worden, familiebanden, man-vrouw tegenstellingen zijn enkele belangrijke thema’s. Maar bovenal is deze bundel onder het oppervlak heel activistisch; je voelt de actievoerders Provoost-Claeys (haar man) onder de huid van de dichter. Er wordt gealludeerd op de pandemie, het nakende sterven, het stijgende water. Krop is ook een aanklacht tegen onze onverschilligheid ten aanzien van het milieu. Maar de liefde blijft de boventoon vormen, als een anker, een rustpunt.

Provoost spreekt de lezer soms rechtstreeks aan (een beetje het Fleabag-effect) en vraagt ook wel wat van ons lezers. Dit is een bundel die je met mondjesmaat leest, laat inwerken en herleest. Ik hoop dat ze nog meer poëzie publiceert in de toekomst!… (altro)

When I saw this novel tucked away in a local charity shop, I pounced immediately. How could I resist a story about the Ark so soon after ferreting deep into the history of its legend? Originally published in Dutch in 2001 (the author is Flemish), it has been translated into English by John Nieuwenhuizen and takes us into a strange and foreign world of fishermen and nomads, boat-builders and prophets. And, at the heart of the tale, is the rumour of a great boat being built in the middle of a desert by a crazy old man, and the young woman who travels with her family to answer the call for workers...
