Meh. My kid picked this one up at the library, no doubt because it had colorful pictures on the cover (she's three). I didn't like that all the comic book writers and artists listed were men -- no women among them. I also didn't like that Joss Whedon's name was misspelled. I was amused by the note at the end that people will start collections as youths and then drop them in their teens and 20s, to pick them up later. Too true!
But, I ultimately wondered, what is the point of this book? The specific tips on what to look for (covers in good shape) and how to store comics were probably helpful (archival quality bags, longboxes, and backing boards).
But do collectors -- even kid collectors -- really need to be told that you collect because you enjoy the process of collecting, learning about the comics, and meeting others in comic culture? Well, maybe this is good for someone looking for a hobby: I need a hobby. Should I make something or collect something or do something? What does collecting mean anyway?
