Badlands, a Novel, New Photo Edition: New Photo Illustrated Edition Vol 2, Num 7 Melinda Camber Porter Archive of Creative Works by Melinda Camber Porter is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. This is not what I expected. I thought this was going to be a good book about a couple going through the Badlands. This is about a strange couple and the woman seems to despise Indians, the feeling I get from the book, and she hates the whole area. She finds no beauty in the land either. She wants to be home and away from there. Her husband is there as a lawyer for a Native American law suit. Right away they meet kids and they are playing, the little boy says he is Steve McQueen and the girl says she is Madonna. The boy asked the woman who she is. The woman says the boy has snake eyes. What? The book continues like that. There is no rhyme or reason for the things they do or say, it is just nonsense. No real plot, no likable characters, just a waste of my time. The "New Photo Illustrated Edition" contains a few pictures, don't expect is to have more than handful scattered pictures of flowers or fields. They are a bit grainy and not appealing in the least. Putting this book in my worst-books-ever file.… (altro)

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book. Is it a charming compilation of a clever young girl's sharp-eyed drawings and descriptions of Elizabethan fashion? Or is it a collection of childish drawings (if rather good ones) and an even larger, slightly bizarre compilation of certificates from school being passed off as something more? I had no familiarity with Melinda Camber Porter; frankly, her (adult) art is in a style I dislike pretty intensely. Apparently she died relatively young, and relatively recently, and this book is apparently a tribute to her and what seems to have been a remarkable and productive live. It just seems to me to be a very odd sort of a tribute.

The usual disclaimer: I received this book via Netgalley for review.

Fashion In The Time Of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603) by Melinda Camber Porter is a nice little book that has not only drawings of the eight year old student, the fashion in the times of Queen Elizabeth 1, but the history of the school Melinda Camber Porter went to at the time she made the book. The book starts by giving the reader a background history of the student, the school, and then starts showing the reader the pictures Melinda drew. The pictures, for an eight year old, are wonderful! My goodness they are detailed! Most adults can't draw this well. The drawing show different outfits, male, female, rich, poor, various hats, shoes, etc. All detailed nicely. The written information is detailed also and very interesting. I guess you really have to be into this sort of history to appreciate this but I enjoyed it and I am far from being a child. I don't know many young children that would find this interesting. I am not sure what niche this book would belong in but maybe more for history buffs. I enjoyed the book tremendously. It was short but it is made for kids. Maybe preteens would enjoy it. The book was very well done I thought. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.… (altro)

A wonderful collection of watercolours that reflect times of mourning and of hope.
Highly recommended.
I was given a digital copy of this book by the publisher Blake Press via Netgalley in return for an honest unbiased review.
