Rutherford Platt (1)

The copy I have was well used by whoever had it before me. The paper is yellow and falling out, but it adds to the mystique. It's amazing how these "old" books have tidbits of knowledge that doesn't show up in modern textbooks. So even though I have a biology degree with many botany courses, I can still enjoy and learn from an obscure general audience book. Between that and the feel of my copy, I feel like I have a hidden treasure.

Platt brought the same enthusiasm displayed in The Great American Forest to this book. It was published in 1971 so I couldn't help wondering how good the decades had been to the science he described. It's a worthy subject. Sam Keane recently published one, Caesar's Last Breath, about air after all. Platt was a good photographer and there are many good pics.

Pure jeugdnostalgie. Een van de eerste boeken die ik cadeau kreeg. Maakte deel uit van een grote reeks, uitgegeven door het Walt Disney-concern. Pulp, kan je misschien denken, maar het was mijn eerste blik voorbij het kleine dorp waarin ik opgroeide.
