The Triple Crown An Account of the Papal Conclaves From the Fifteenth Century to Modern Times, by Valerie Pirie (read Mar 23, 2001) This is a 1935 book but it is not a good book, though the subject has great interest. There are no footnotes, and no source notes. It reads like a National Inquirer account, so reading it was a waste of time. But it is of some interest that though Pirie has never heard of a scandal she doesn't tell about, she agrees that all reputable historians treat the legend of a female pope Joan with the utmost contempt. This is the other unworthwhile book I read this month. (The other one was La Grande Therese, by Hilary Sparling.)… (altro)
