In this booklet, Joseph Pickvance, who has studied Fox's published and unpublished writings over many years, sets out in Fox's own words the opening section of the early Christian message he expounded.

This slim volume is intended to accompany the Nickall edition of the Journal and is prefaced with an outline of the seventeenth century religious scene; a brief description of the man, and a discourse on Fox’s use of language. The main themes of his teachings are accompanied by analyses and short articles. Words and phrases are listed in a useful Concordance.
