På den amerikanska ambassaden i Saigon sitter Wilson Abbot Lord, chefen för CIA i Vietnam, och bestämmer sig för att det inte finns någon annan utväg - han måste döda presidentens liberale rådgivare som är på väg. Alltför mycket står på spel, alltför många liv är redan spillda för att dra sig ur nu.

Och på höjd 742 i närheten av Khe Sanh i den vietnamesiska djungeln, ber fänrik Luke Bishop stridsledningen om att förflyttas. Höjden är omgiven av fienden, det är bara en fråga om dagar innan hans tjugo soldater kommer att övermannas och dödas. Stridsledningen avslår hans begäran utan motivering.
