Young Adult novels are never (or rarely) as sophisticated or complex as adult novels such as "A Tale of Two Cities" or "The Importance of Being Earnest," and this is not a book of that caliber. However, I often read YA books during vacations from graduate school for light, casual reading. This is an engaging story, with compelling characters. I read the trilogy over the past three days. The story is predictable; for example, in the first book, there is some doubt as to the identity of the old woman in the group, but it is easy to predict who she must be. Similarly, in the last book, after the characters foresee three possible ends for the world, it is easy to predict the variation on one of them that must be how the story will end. These are YA books, not complicated adult novels (so don't expect them to be something that they are not), but they are entertaining to read.

And you can get a free book from the author when you reach the end of this one.

Earth has sent 13 ships into space to found a colony on another planet -- but it will take 700 years of space travel to arrive! And the ship that arrives with the highest "conformity" score wins a prize. Or do they? This is an exciting dystopian novel with echoes of Brave New World.

What this series lacks in character development and proofreading, it makes up for in an incredibly original premise. Thirteen ships sail from Earth to settle a distant star. You might think this is your typical long-term colonization story, but each ship carries exactly the same crew: they are all clones. It's a story of nature versus nurture as each ship develops its own culture and the clones turn out in different ways.

I wanted to love this book because I like Sci-fi space books purely because I loved shows like Firefly. The crews in space and how close the must be always seems so unique to the genre. But when you go in liking something because of one thing that can skew your tastes. So with that considered, I did enjoy this book and I would recommend to anyone who likes Sci-Fi with an interest in space adventures in a dystopian society. M.M. Perry has written a good book here full of colorful detail, action, and a lifestyle that was interesting to read about. I say lifestyle because of how people behave on the spaceship. It is different for sure. It did take me a while to get through this because of life circumstances and that we are currently in the process of moving, so I have been busy, but I don't think it would be hard for anyone to really get through in a few days.… (altro)
