Op 23 januari 2002 verliet Daniel Pearl, verslaggever voor de Wall Street Journal in Pakistan, zijn huis in Karachi voor een geheime ontmoeting. Het was de laatste keer dat zijn zwangere vrouw Mariane hem leven zag. Daniel werd ontvoerd door Pakistaanse terroristen, die hem ervan beschuldigden voor de CIA te werken en de vrijlating eisden van alle gevangen Taliban- en Al Qaeda-strijders. This is Mariane Pearl's account of what happened in Pakistan in the wake of 9/11 when her fellow journalist husband was kidnapped and eventually murdered by terrorists. It is a survival story in many respects as you learn how she coped, which included a combination of tapping her Buddhist teachings to stay centered and springing into action to become a central driving force in the investigation to try and find him. Most people wonder how they would cope under extreme duress and this is one person's account of how she did it, pregnant with their first child no less. It's also an interesting look at the workings of the country at that time as the U.S. was responding to the threat of terrorism. Give this a read.… (altro)

rabck from dove-i-libri; I don’t remember much about this journalist's kidnapping and death. The story is told by his widow, who was also a journalist in Pakistan and pregnant. A lot of information about how journalism operates, and her position that the Wall Street Journal was not prepared to handle a crisis situation despite having foreign correspondents in war areas. As the week tick by, and the investigation continued, who do you trust? She's up against terrorists, dysfunctional governments, everyone seeming to have their own agenda and a clash of cultures.… (altro)
