An excellent book if you're looking to learn more about the liberal arts or a classical liberal arts education in both America and its origins. There are a lot of good historical points of reference one could look into later but I will say, its rather dry in most places and long-winded in others. Hence, the subtraction of a star. There's a whole section on elitism and how that has often played in the liberal arts so there is value in reading that portion just for it's own sake. If you're looking for a guide to teaching yourself, look elsewhere. There is no 'how-to' just a discussion on how things used to be taught but that has since lost its merit in present day America. The liberal arts has to evolve and the final chapter does provide some points on how America could benefit from a renewed interest in classical debate, etc. but in a way that still reflects American values. Overall, it's an interesting read but I did find myself disagreeing with more points than naught.… (altro)
