Pau (Tante)

In a fantasy world of talking animals on the verge of their version of World War II, Curtiss Hill is a rich asshole who drives race cars for a hobby. The book is mostly about his racing and romantic rivalry with Rowlf Zeichner, with much cheating and jealousy. Late in the game, arms dealing and refugees from genocide get dragged into the mix with little effectiveness beyond window dressing for the characters' reputations.

The prose was very stilted, and I was surprised that there was no credited translator or note of a previous printing in another language, but a little research turned up the fact that this was indeed first published in Spanish in 2020.

I was also surprised that there is also no note that this is the first volume of a series, because it does not have a real ending; it just stops. Not that I would bother reading the second volume if it ever were to appear.
