Rose Marie is the new girl at school. On her first day she is instantly bullied for being overweight. Everyone laughs when Genevieve calls her “fat, fat Rose Marie,” except a girl named Claire. Rose Marie and Claire become best friends and end up doing everything together. When all of the students attend a carnival, the duo happily ride and play games together until Genevieve bullies Claire into leaving Rose Marie by herself. Claire goes along with it in the beginning but eventually stands up for Rose Marie by shoving ice cream in Genevieve’s face.
Being a new student is already hard enough without being a target of bullying. I remember how nervous and scared I was to be the new kid at school.
This book teaches an important lesson about acceptance and being kind to one another that is so important for children to learn at an early age. It would be a great book to read aloud and start a discussion with students about bullying and sticking up for what is right.
Although I didn’t necessarily enjoy its delivery, the moral of the story is very important.

This book tells the story of a young girl named Rose Marie going to a new school and becoming friends with a girl named Claire. On Rose Marie’s very first day she stats getting bullied and teased for being fat. Claire doesn't seem to care and they become really good friends. However on a class field trip they go to a carnival and Claire is bullied into leaving Rose Marie alone on all of the rides. Eventually Claire stands up to the bully and joins Rose Marie and they become best friends. I thought this was a very important and interesting children book to read. Upon first glance I was a little put of by how blunt and open the subject matter was. However I feel that the story present was extremely realistic and could be helpful to many students everywhere. Overall I think this could be a great book to read to the right group of students.… (altro)

This story is about a young girl named Rose Marie who is the new girl at school. Rose Marie meets a girl named claire and they become best friends. In this story, we see many different settings. It starts off in Rose Marie's school and moves to her house and her friend Claire's house, however, I would say the main setting is the carnival. The school class goes on a class field trip to a carnival and there we see Rose Marie get bullied for being overweight. Rose Marie is different looking than the other girls in her class. Her stomach and thighs are a little bigger than the rest of the girls in her class but Claire doesn't seem to care. A girl named Genevieve is the one who always shouts," fat, fat Rose Marie". It hurts Rose Marie but she knows that Claire is her friend and that is all she needs. While at the carnival Genevieve starts making fun of Rose Marie again Claire shoves am ice cream cone in her face. Genevieve finally knows how it feels to be bullied and she does not like it.… (altro)

Rosie Marie was the new student at school and the first thing the students noticed was that she was overweight. They would laugh and shout "Fat, Fat Rose Marie" ever since that first day. Making fun of her was not very nice and Claire knew that. She did not laugh at all. Claire and Rose Marie came to be really good friends and even went over to each other's house. However, there was always someone to make fun of her, especially Genevieve. She always had mean nasty words to say to her about her weight. Their teacher, Miss Binn, announced that they would be going on a field trip to the fair. Genevieve made fun of Rose and asked if there was going to have a sideshow with a "FAT lady." Claire knew that these words were mean and hurtful but she never said anything to her. At the fair, the two of them rode rides together and even won a stuffed dinosaur playing the water-gun-burst-the-balloon game. However, when they were in line for the roller coaster, Genevieve said that no one could get on a ride with Rose Marie and so she took Claire by the arm and she rode next to her for the next few rides. When she finally had enough, she stuck the ice-cream cone she was eating in her face! Although this probably was not the best thing to do, she finally stood up for her new best friend. It's tough being the new kid at school, especially when everyone makes fun of you. This book teaches children that weight should have nothing to do with friendship and that it isn't nice to bully others. I can relate to this since I've been bullied for being overweight in school. It does not feel very good to be bullied and students need to learn that each and every person is different and is uniquely special. We never know the problems that people face.… (altro)
