Breve biografia
Christabel Pankhurst was born in Manchester, the eldest daughter of Richard and Emmeline Pankhurst and elder sister of Sylvia and Adela Pankhurst. She received a law degree from the University of Manchester, though she was not permitted to practice law, and lived for a while in Switzerland. With her mother, in 1903 she founded the Women's Social and Political Union to win the right to vote for women. The women's suffrage movement received enormous media coverage in 1905 when Christabel and Annie Kenney were arrested at a Liberal election meeting in Manchester. Christabel moved to London and became famous for her dynamic public speaking on behalf of women's rights. She ran for Parliament in 1918 and was narrowly defeated. Christabel was later closely involved with Christian evangelism and wrote several religious tracts. In 1936, she was created a Dame Commander of the British Empire by King George VI. In 1940, she moved to the USA. Dame Christabel was the author of memoirs entitled Unshackled: The Story of How We Won the Vote, published posthumously in 1959.

"Rare survival of this leaflet issued by the Women's Social and Political Union in which Christabel Pankhurst justified the actions taken by the 'militant suffragists' on the 1st March 1912, when they took part in a mass window-smashing demonstration. 'At last the patience of women is exhausted. They are conscious of intolerable evils and of deep wrongs inflicted upon the poorest and most miserable of their sex. They are determined that nothing shall stand in the way of women's enfranchisement now. The message of the broken pane is that women are determined that the lives of their sisters shall no longer be broken, and that in future those who have to obey the law shall have a voice in saying what that law shall be. Repression cannot break the spirit of liberty. The time has come when, in the interests of the community, a just and reasonable demand must be satisfied and peace secured by the granting of votes for women' (concluding statement). It was said that approximately 150 women smashed windows simultaneously across the capital on the 1st March 1912 and this was only day one of the campaign. The scale and organisation behind such actions was unparalleled, and the likes of such protests led by women, had never been seen before." (Pickering & Chatto, cat. 799, lot 72).… (altro)

c. 1924, hardcover, 191 pp. Written just after WW1, it echoes what Pastor has said about post- and pre-milleniumism. That people assumed that the world was getting better and better and once it was perfect, Jesus would come back. WW1 made people realize the world was not getting better and better. Well-written in the style of that time.
