"The world can be a dangerous place for a little creature." (28)

Tiny Ember (human appearance, but small enough to hide under a cup) wants to join school and have friends, but it isn't working out. When Ember meets sea turtle Lua on the beach, she offers to take him to the island where she went to school. Ember goes with Lua, but the island of lost creatures isn't the haven Ember imagined - at least, not at first. Other classmates make fun, and danger abounds. However, Ember has a good heart and a good soul, and eventually wins their classmates to their side.

A sweet fantasy adventure.

More like a 3, but I really liked the charm of this story and the focus on the need for community. There's also the subtle message that your family doesn't have to be who you were born to but the ones who loved and took care of you instead.

The different creatures of the world were fun! There's a mixture of imaginative and realistic creatures. The artwork is simple but extremely effective in conveying the story. The scenes in the cave were a pleasure to look at.

I hope this could become a series.

I enjoyed the friendship between Iris and Sam, and the feeling of wanting to get out of your “too small” hometown. But I didn’t understand the Lily stuff well.

I think the clock tower started a time loop? But did lily die or did ben eventually save her? Because it seems he married her? Or was that just a phantom memory that the tower kept replaying because Iris triggered it?

Trigger warnings: Floods

Sounds like another good fantasy novel!
Update: 6.5/10, this was an OK graphic novel but even though I quite enjoyed this it left some plot holes when I finished it and I highly doubt that I would pick this up again especially considering that I've read better ones since then, where do I begin. The characters were all flat but Iris was self-centered at first but she stopped being that way in the end so at least there's one person who got character development. The plot was very confusing and I could not just wrap my head around it. There was a lost city that had a dam which overflowed flooding the city then the waters receded and then it flooded again? There was a scene about a clock tower and a bell which might be related to the plot but I didn't understand how exactly it was related. In the end the main character barely escapes the old town then goes to the new town for the unveiling of the sculpture and that ends this book which was a very mixed bag. If you like graphic novels try Wingbearer by Marjorie M. Liu instead of this.… (altro)
