Landscape with Reptile, like so many great works of nature writing, binds itself strictly in one dimension and in doing so opens a wide vista in all other dimensions. Palmer deals with just one snake, Crotalus horridus aka the timber rattlesnake; moreover, he deals with just one small and now-isolated population of rattlesnakes, a group in the Blue Hills outside Boston which probably contains about fifty adults.
