The Enlightenment: And Why It Still Matters di Anthony Pagden
This is not light reading for your weekend at the beach; it covers a lot of history and philosophy, explaining the Enlightenment and the individuals (philosophes) involved. My main complaint, which lost it a star, is that it never really does a good job of addressing the subtitle. It does a good, thorough job of discussing the Enlightenment, then talks about the enemies of the Enlightenment, but not much about why it still matters. It is also unfortunate, at least to me, that he did not discuss the modern enemies of the Enlightenment, and why we need to keep fighting these battles for reason and knowledge. Overall, a useful informative book and well written; you'll have to form your own opinions on why it still matters.… (altro)
Mundos em Guerra aborda a história da luta entre o Oriente e o Ocidente, desde os períodos clássicos até os conflitos do século XXI. Guerras essas que, segundo a obra, têm sido não somente as mais longas da história, como também, as mais caras da humanidade. Para o autor, foi por meio delas que o Ocidente esculpiu sua própria imagem como independente. Foram estas guerras, também, que deram forma e moldaram a natureza do mundo moderno.
Neste livro é evidente um excesso de anglismo e de visão anglófila. Além disso, faz muitas afirmações que não justifica. Sobre o mundo não anglófono deixou os estudos incipientes, resultando conclusões inexactas. Afinal, a melhor parte é a introdução, onde não refere factos, ficando-se pelo plano teórico.
Competent but not a very novel retelling of world history. The running theme seems very much in the background despite constant callbacks. Maybe that's why you need the callbacks - because it's not really visible otherwise.
