It was a balm to my just-turned-40 heart.

The middle years, when you are neither young nor old, are fuzzy years. You can no longer see the shore you started from, but you can't yet get a clear enough view of the shore you're heading for. You spend these years trashing about in the middle of a big lake, out of breath, flagging from the tedium of swimming. You pass, at a loss, and turn around in circles, again and again. Fear sets in, the fear of sinking halfway, without a sound, without a cause.

I don't know if anybody could have described better how I'm starting to feel.

The love I have inside me has turned to liquid and now runs into the most unlikely places. The bitterness I was carrying around has disappeared, along with the last remainders of youthful arrogance. In their place, I can detect the onset of a mellowing with age, which can sometimes lead to a slight tendency towards kitsch (see 'little pink flowers' above). I don't care. No one can see me.

This gives me some hope that this middle-of-the-big lake stage will pass.

She definitely gets a better view of the other shore while working as a chiropodist in Marzahn. I also got it while reading the book. It's not a very sunny shore, but has its glimmers. She does manage to transfer some of her obtained mellowing to her readers. The book also transfers a very strong sense of place, of this prefab tower block district in the Eastern suburbs of Berlin, which was part of GDR once. A beautifully written gem of a book about Marzahn, its (mostly elderly) inhabitants and one middle-age woman's search for her inner compass.… (altro)

Die Autorin hat mit Mitte 40 eine Ausbildung zur Fußpflegerin gemacht und schildert hier nun ihre Kunden und Kundinnen aus Marzahn, einem Berliner Plattenbau-Ortsteil. Es sind keine reichen Menschen und oftmals alte Menschen, die sich hier einfinden. Katja Oskamp behandelt die Füße und hört die Geschichten. Mir ist der Lebenslauf von Gerlinde Bonkat sehr ans Herz gegangen, aber auch alle anderen Texte zeugen von Respekt und Annahme, das mochte ich gern.
Zwei Nebengedanken: Wenn die Autorin die Füße schildert, denke ich, ich sollte vielleicht auch mal zur Fußpflege gehen. Ich scheue mich ja schon wegen meiner Füße - aber die sind vermutlich vergleichsweise gut beieinander ;-)
Die Autorin kommt einem in dem Buch natürlich nahe, daher habe ich mich dann noch auf ihrer Homepage umgesehen und war recht enttäuscht von einem Text übers Lehramststudium. Das ist ein typisches Beispiel eines Textes, der aus einer singulären Erfahrung, die die Autorin nicht mal selbst gemacht hat, ins Lamentieren über einen Gegenstand gerät, von dem sie keine Ahnung hat. Nicht, dass man da nicht vieles kritisieren könnte, aber wenn, dann fundiert. Schade, denn das hat meinen positiven Eindruck zunichte gemacht, dass man, wenn es nur drei Texte auf der Homepage gibt, so einen schlechten für veröffentlichungswert hält.… (altro)
