Rod Nye

Nye has delivered a stock standard cricket biography on New Zealand star of the 1940s Martin Donnelly. Not that stock standard cricket biographies are bad per se, but Nye's Donnelly just doesn't excite the reader. Perhaps the fact that Donnelly was still alive when this was written may explain why Nye seemed to reverential of Donnelly.

Donnelly's story from his birth in rural New Zealand to his cricketing career, his war-time exploits in Africa and Italy, his stint at Oxford University, his (brief) return to international cricket, his (brief) representative rugby career and his early sporting retirement are covered, although none remain too memorable after finishing the book. Still, I shouldn't complain too much; the spelling and grammatical errors were all but non-existant and I did feel jealous of those Oxford students who got to watch Donnelly bat for free.… (altro)
