Breve biografia
[excerpt from French Funerals & Cremations online obituary]
After completing Army service, 1945-47, he majored in commercial art at Wayne University. Working for several years as a mechanical illustrator in Detroit art studios, he then entered a 30-year career with the Detroit Public Schools, teaching art at the vocational high school level and earning master's degrees in education and humanities. Over a period of 20 years, Noyer was yearbook artist and art history instructor at St. Mary's College, Orchard Lake, MI, where he was made an Honorary Alumnus in 1956. After retiring in 1986, he moved to New Mexico with his wife, exhibited paintings and woodcut prints in local galleries, and served for 3.5 years as a Vista Volunteer. Noyer began a writing career that included ten historical novels and contemporary novels set in Michigan and New Mexico.

Getorius and Arcadia, husband a surgeon, his wife studying to become a doctor, spend some time in Constantinople but leave when there is unrest in the city, along with others, and wind up in Pergamum. The couple investigate murders. There are women clergy there, which was new to me; apparently in the early Orthodox church there were women who filled that function. One especially zealous one wants to destroy a pagan healing shrine. A quick, enjoyable read.

Come, come! Some of the other review(er)s are too harsh!

This is not fine writing, and the research is not worn lightly; in fact, yes, there's much to mock - but it's an interesting and neglected period, and the author does his best to animate it in a way that might have been better done by others, but hasn't been.

A gauntlet, then: do it better, and I for one will read your version.

Ancient history mystery. Very descriptive of customs and the cultures involved.

Set in 5th century Ravenna, this mystery novel is made dense and detailed by Noyer's vibrant descriptions of social life, customs, and culture. Surgeon Getorius Asterius and his wife, medica Arcadia, become embroiled in a strange mystery when they find a dead eunuch in an Arian church and a pregnant woman who claims to be a Vestal Virgin. The plot grows more elaborate when it is discovered that a local Senator might be involved with smuggling and counterfeiting and the Arian presbytera is mysteriously killed. Though this is the second book in a series, it stands alone nicely and I didn't feel hampered by not reading the first.… (altro)
