THE DUTCH CIVIL WAR 1566-1609

I collected a wealth of material and extensively explored the theme through reading, thinking and writing. I finished two chapters and a number of shorter pieces. I completed the draft version of an article, to be presented to a leading historical journal. My research focuses on three different themes. First, it investigates contemporary notions of the Revolt. It appears that many of the greatest minds of the period, such as Lipsius, Coornhert, and Stevin, did indeed regard the conflict in these terms. Secondly, it takes as its point of departure present-day models of civil wars, as developed by social scientists, and applies these to the Dutch revolt. This results in new insights as to its unfolding, phasing, and termination. And finally I have begun exploring the question of the conclusion of the civil war. If the inhabitants of the Netherlands were engaged in a protracted, lethal, internal conflict, how did they succeed in attaining reconciliation and embark, at least in the Northern provinces, on their Golden Age? Discussing my work with colleagues has been immensely fruitful. In particular, scholarly discussions with the other VNC-fellow, Guido Marnef, and with Judith Pollmann, both of them working on themes closely related to my own, were stimulating and rewarding.

Amsterdam is onder de Hollandse steden een relatief jonge stad. Dordrecht, Leiden en Haarlem kunnen bijvoorbeeld bogen op een hogere ouderdom. Pas tegen het einde van de dertiende eeuw zet het proces van verstedelijking door. De dam in de Amstel wordt een bindende factor tussen een vijftal kleine bewoningskernen die op beide oevers van de Amstel waren ontstaan. In het midden van de vijftiende eeuw is Amsterdam uitgegroeid tot de rijkste koopmansstad in Holland.
Amsterdam is als het ware uit het niets ontstaan. Het kleine vlekje aan de monding van de Amstel had het geluk over een goede en veilige haven te beschikken. Aanvankelijk passieve, later ook actieve handel en het ontstaan van nijverheid, zoals de textielnijverheid, maakten van Amsterdam een voor velen aantrekkelijke stad. Immigranten deden de bevolking groeien met als gevolg dat de stad enkele malen moest worden vergroot. Voor de samenleving betekende dit dat deze aanzienlijk complexer werd en dat de eenheid onder druk kwam te staan. Het stadsbestuur verstevigde zijn greep op het stedelijke wel en wee, gebruikmakend van zijn op privileges gestoelde autonomie. Het groeiende zelfbewustzijn van de stedelingen manifesteerde zich al vroeg in het religieuze leven, waarin de burger als individu een steeds grotere rol ging spelen. Gilden en broederschappen waren uitingen van saamhorigheid en caritas. De burgerij was trots op haar stad en gaf daaraan op verschillende wijze uiting. De reeks schuttersstukken, een Amsterdamse vinding, verbindt broederschapgedachte aan burgertrots.
In de eerste jaren van de zestiende eeuw klopten de ideeën van de Reformatie aan de poort van het katholieke Amsterdam, waardoor de stad verscheurd raakte. Op het Wederdopersoproer van 1535 en de beeldenstorm van 1566 volgden heftige reacties. Amsterdam sloot zich als een van de laatste Hollandse steden bij de Opstand aan, waarmee een tijdvak werd afgesloten.… (altro)
