- Breve biografia
- R.A. Nicholson was a renowned English orientalist, a scholar of Islamic literature and mysticism and a translator of important Sufi texts. Reynold was born in Keighley and died in Chester, maintaining the strong family links with the north of England. After studies at Aberdeen University and Trinity College, Cambridge, this Nicholson went on to become lecturer in Persian and then Professor of Arabic at Cambridge. Two important books include Literary History of The Arabs (1907) and The Mystics of Islam (1914) Between 1925 and 1940 Nicholson worked on a critical edition of Rumi’s Masnavi, published in eight volumes.

El profesor Nicholson, lector de persa y árabe de la Universidad de Cambridge y profundo conocedor de la tradición mística, , traductor de persa y árabe y eminente ensayista y conferenciante. Hasta el final de su vida ocupó el cargo de Lector de Persa en la Universidad de Cambridge y era igualmente miembro del Trinity College. despliega en esta obra los ventanales desde donde se contempla uno de los más bellos panoramas del mundo del espíritu: la visión de Dios manifestada con el ropaje de los poetas y místicos del Islam.
Hallaremos aquí la esencia de las doctrinas islámicas y de la tradición sufí, desde el carácter, origen y desenvolvimiento histórico del sufismo y sus relaciones con el Islam hasta sus expresiones, métodos y prácticas, pasando por el estudio comparado de las principales religiones del mundo, todo ello ejemplificado a través de citas escogidas de quienes fueron sus más destacados exponentes: Ahmad ibn AlHawari, Ibn Al-Arabi, Kashf Al Mahyub, Hafiz, Rabiá, Jalaluddin Rumi, Junayd, Omar Khayyam, Abu Said Ibn Abi l Khayr, Nari y Bayazid Al-Bistami, entre otros.
