This crime novel set is in the barrios outside of Buenos Aires takes place over a few propulsive days, depicting a teenager going from borderline innocent to a combatant in a brutal drug war between rival gangs. It is well written (although the street language sometimes seems off in what is generally a well done translation). And heartbreaking at times. Although the overall plot and setting are reasonably well trodden ground.

Het boek beschrijft het leven van 2 vrienden in een geweldadige achterbuurt. De ellende wordt met iedere pagina groter. Er is een soort parallel met het verhaal van Moby Dick dat door 1 van de jonhens wordt gelezen. Jammer genoeg komt die parallel niet erg goed uit de verf. Aan het eind probeert een intellectueel de vergelijking te maken: Moby Dick staat voor de schipbreuk van een hele samenleving. Hoewel de omstandigheden deprimerend zijn is het boek goed geschreven, met veel vaart. Het uitzichtloze van de jongens wordt scherp neergezet.… (altro)
