A popular book about Mesozoic marine reptiles. That means in the first instance plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs, and mosasaurs, but lesser-known groups like nothosaurs and metriorhynchids are also treated, as well as early sea turtles. Aimed at the educated layman, the book assumes little or no previous familiarity with the animals, but it doesn't dumb stuff down either. I found it delightful.

Love it- been following TetZoo blog on and off for the past few years, and John Conway is one of my favorite modern paleoartists. In All Yesterdays, Naish, Conway, and Kosemen consider the bits that don't fossilize- integument, musculature and fat, and behavior such as play and rest. There's a short section on All Todays, applying conventional paleoartists trends and interpretations to today's extant critters- my favorite is probably the swan.

In a word, this is a very cool book, and besides illustrating ancient life, it exposes the reader to a burgeoning world of artists, turning cutting edge research into art. For "sense of wonder" it really can't be topped, and I have no qualms in giving it top marks.

A massive coffee-table type book showcasing the work of twenty "palaeoartists". Most work in realist styles, but a few go for more stylized or abstract approaches that don't attempt to depict what the creatures may really have looked like. Those were for the most part not really to my taste, but much of the rest of the book I found excellent.

The title is a bit of a misnomer - while Mesozoic animals generally and dinosaurs in particular dominate the book, there's some Palaeozoic and Cenozoic animals in there too.… (altro)
