Reading a book by a German historian on slavery in the Americas may seem odd when you learned 'all about this' in school, and have read a lot in English about it. But I had never heard before about the connections between what was going on in Europe and how the slave trade developed. Nor that a large proportion of the tradegoods used to pay for the slaves in Africa was made up of German linen. Nor had any other book I read spend as much time on Latin America. This is really worth reading.
