This series finale recovers slightly from the long slump of the last story arc, but mostly because the main story abruptly stops about 60 percent of the way through the book, and then we are given a long and loving where-are-they-now sequence set five to ten years in the future.

I love the characters and the spirit of the series, but the magic of the first arc was squandered once the evil schoolmaster showed up so many volumes ago. It was worth the ride but could have been so much more.

What a disappointing offering for the penultimate serving of the series. The final villain and the ultimate big bad are even worse than the one from the previous story arc.

Half or more of this book is given over to the raving of Soma's final rival, Asahi Saiba, a young man who was once an apprentice to Soma's father. All he does is talk about the knives he has taken from defeated rivals and how he likes to cross them and rub them against each other and talk about how good it feels to rub the knives against each other and how everyone should rub their knives together because it feels so good to cross knives and wouldn't it be good to have Soma's knife to fondle and cross with the knives he has taken from Soma's father and best friend because their knives are so good but are now Saiba's to do with as he wants just like soon Soma's pathetic little knife will be and . . . and . . . and . . . ahhhhhhhhhhh . . .

I think there's symbolism here somewhere?

As the series continues to weave drunkenly toward its conclusion with a big final tournament featuring outrageous villains and twists, it still manages to sneak in a few quality scenes between Soma and his father and his school rival Takumi Aldini. There is so much sound and fury going on, but I think the soul of the series is still alive in there somewhere.

The final tournament is underway! Some familiar faces return, some colorful new villains emerge, and we are supposed to be wondering who is the mysterious Book Master running the whole thing. It's good to see that Soma still has a burning competitive streak and is willing to learn from his mistakes, but the series seems to be coasting out with just another competition and the usual flashes of fan service as a new batch of judges have orgasmic reactions to the food.

The creators are doing more of the same instead of stepping up their game. Fortunately, that "same" is still pretty good.… (altro)
