The Monkmans have published several coffee table books of beautiful New England Autumn photos and this book, a heavy-papered travel guide, has equally stunning photos. Broken into categories such as 'Coastal' or 'Appalachian', this book provides the route for driving tours that maximize the amount of fall foliage you'll see. Rather than listing restaurants, hotels and stores to stop in, this gives the locations of ponds, waterfalls and summits.

Fall Foliage throughout New England. The husband and wife photography team particularly like waterfalls and streams. Lots of good shots of forests in Maine and one of leaves in the process of turning. I'd always assumed it happened from the stem down, like a fade, but this shows it to be spotting, like the measles.

This photo essay book features lovely photographs covering the fall season in the northeast, when foliage is at its most enchanting. Trees burst in an effusion of scarlet and orange and amber, brilliant leaves carpet the ground, and thick green conifers continue to proudly assert their original color. We vacationed in Vermont this year for our annual family trip, and it truly is lovely. This book will help me vividly relive my memories of a perfect fall season. The majority of the book is filled with large photographs, accompanied with a caption identifying the location of the shot. Sweeping vistas are mixed with close-ups of leaves and waterfalls, but every picture is gorgeous. The locations mainly cover regions in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

A couple of informative essays are also included. They describe the forest regions of the northeast and their formation, and explain the scientific process that leads to colorful foliage. The text is vaguely interesting, but these topics are certainly better covered in other books; the main attraction is clearly the photography, and the text feels like filler that justifies the book format (one must have writing in a book). The authors prove themselves as admirable artists when it comes to landscape, and their pictures justify the cost. As a memento of a personal experience, this book is a great find for my family. I also can see it being a treasure for those who live or have lived in these parts, and others who love the fall season and want to experience it year-round. It has a limited appeal, but successfully accomplishes its intended purpose.
